There are two main kinds of education: one that teaches you how to make a living; and the other teaches you how to live. As you can see here, the former is the formal education, where one is taught in school the basic, academic, or trade skills; where the latter is the non-formal and/or informal type where one is taught and/or teaches himself the basic necessities of living such as, cooking, and other basic skills to survive. If you ask me, both are important for it is like gaining a corporate position and yet gaining inwardness in life. No matter what form it takes, education is still a process of teaching and learning that involves a life-long development. Such process is essential in the growth of the individual and beneficial to the society, for it molds the very person that creates, interacts and forms the environment.

Education is not a one-way process for it is designed to be interactive. It is thus erroneous to assume that in imparting education, only the students can gain knowledge through it. The teacher as well can discern and can be influenced by their students, as it is a continuous and two-way formation. When this method is not properly executed, it may produce negative effects to both student and teacher hindering their growth and development as an individual. Evidently, the discipline implicates an open mind to both the teacher and the student to be able to absorb raw knowledge and apply it positively. Having an open mind for most of the time necessitates education for not all people are born with it. So you see? Education should open the mind as well. It is indeed important to be educated, regardless of form, for it cultivates character and intellect. This is the same reason why the graduates, during university convocation ceremonies are presented an award for their degrees because they have been found worthy in character and learning.

The heart of education is an effective learning and personal development. Learning is a continuous process to acquire knowledge and skill through study, instruction, and experience that involved cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains. Classical conditioning or habituation, as well as complex activities such as play, may be the main causes of learning that occurs consciously or subconsciously. Based on this, evidence has also been gathered that human behavioral learning through habituation started as early as 32 weeks into gestation, signifying that the nervous system is capable of learning and memory at such an early stage. In fact, research suggests that babies learn the language by acquiring approximately 9 words per day. Now, that’s what I call baby talk! However, a sixty year old adult trying to learn a new language will not be able to maintain the similar amount of data at the same rate. It is thus important to feed quality raw information even at prenatal stage for the individual to start absorbing knowledge and develop the thinking process early on as this will indeed be advantageous in the long run. Learning at an early stage can make us realize beforehand the mistakes that needed to be corrected, the insights that need to be acquired, and the skills to be refined. That is why, effective learning involves creating solutions to our own errors. Indeed, those who never make mistakes lose a great many chances to learn something. That is the very reason why we say that experience is the best teacher, as we do not only learn in school, but through our own failures and adventures. This implies that the learning process involves humility and patience for it is an arduous yet enjoyable journey in searching for knowledge, building character, and as such, imparting it to the world. Extort to open the mind, and you will see the world from a different perspective. Everyone learns differently and as such, learning can also be sought differently. Combining learning and education with action will not only retain what you have learned, but will widen yours and others’ understanding as well. Education is, in fact, what remains after one has forgotten everything that he learned in school.

Education is known to be one of the souls of our survival. We are living in a world full of complexities that challenged us throughout our lives. In an educational process, we considered the presence of a teacher and a student. Without this two components learning will be much harder. A teacher can be anyone in this world that is capable of teaching us something. Our parents can be a good example of a teacher. As we all know they are the ones who taught us how to be good sons and daughter. They also taught us how to do house chores and brought us the view of how life looks like. Actually, a teacher can be anything whether it comes from a living or non-living things. An example of a lifeless teacher is our daily experiences and observations. These things can be a subject for us to learn new things.

As you read along this article we will be focusing more on the student nurses and their teachers. This is for us to know how a student and a teacher of a certain nursing school able to deal with the broad information of the profession. Let us start first with the leaner. When you enter a nursing school you can probably feel that you are so empty. Learning about this health related field is not as easy as reading a book. Medical terminologies and functions are the common challenge that a student will face. As we can see most nursing students today are composed of young female individuals. Since these student nurses are still in their adolescent stage, they must do their best to achieve maturity and independence. The student must take the nursing course out from their own decision and interest.

She must equip with the potential ability that is capable of performing flexible tasks in rendering care to his or her patient. Aside from that the student must have a good level of spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical growth. She or he is expected to have a good academic performance. A student that has broader life experiences may have an easy way studying the course. A good social and personal adjustment may also be needed for the student to survive in the institution or from an organization. He or she should expect that there will be plenty of challenges and problems that may occur on a nursing life. In this case, an emotional and educational support may be necessary. As what a normal person would usually do daily, time management is also important in a nursing student’s life. This serves as the timeframe of task and priorities.

Now lets move on to the teacher’s role in a nursing school. Giving adequate knowledge to a nursing student may not be as easy as teaching a common college course. In a nursing school, they used to call their teachers as clinical instructors. These individuals must have the following qualities to give an effective educational service. First of all, they must have respect to the student. This is very true. Most students want to be respected as what they are. This is commonly neglected by several clinical instructors.

They must have a broad experience in a different clinical field. Information learned in nursing is widely based on evidenced-based practice. Details are much easier to retain if they are frequently applied.

A clinical instructor must be a good role model and an effective leader. This is also one of the things neglected by C.I. One must have a strong and firm personality so that student will not underestimate them.

To have a good and interesting discussion of a certain topic the clinical instructor must have a sense of humor. This will help shift a boring lecture to an interesting one. The clinical instructor must give clear and precise assignments since nursing field is too broad.

The C.I. must always prepare his or her topic to be discussed on the next day. Asking self questions may help in generating more ideas. They also need to be kind and patient. They must always control their temper inside the classroom. They must never threaten the students, since they can easily hate teachers for what they are. Clinical instructors will most probably have a hard time dealing with the students if this will be the situation.
